The KFA Public Education Committee is planning a meeting at State Fire School to be held in a space “near registration” in the Lexington Convention Center on June 4th. The time will be 1630. This should enable us to meet and finish up prior to dinner. Kentucky is still listed as #8 in civilian fire deaths and we have seen an uptick in Firefighter LODD recently. We seem to have little in the way of a coordinated effort in prevention. In the mid 90’s we saw a significant reduction in fire deaths with the coordinated effort of “Learn Not To Burn”.
Meredith Hawes from NFPA Public Education Division will be in town for the public education class. She has offered to attend this meeting to lend assistance. I encourage anyone with an interest in public education to attend but would like to see representatives from the fire service leading stakeholders present (Fire Commission, State Fire Marshall Office, KFA, KPF, The Kentucky Fire Chiefs Association, and Kentucky Injury Prevention). The purpose of the meeting is to:
· Determine the best practice for research of statistical data on Firefighter and Civilian Casualties
· Thoughts on direction of public education/prevention for our Commonwealth
· Potential funding mechanisms including future AFG Public Education Grant Requests
· Establish an updated list of fire service public educators
Detailed information on the room will be forthcoming. Please plan to attend. If you have questions feel free to call me. If you could forward this message to any potential interested parties.
Please RSVP via email if you can attend.
